Aim: Microalgae are discussed as an alternative feed resource as they have a favourable nutrient composition and can be cultivated independent from arable land. However, many microalgae species develop robust cell walls or cell coverings which may impair cell content digestibility. Furthermore, their nutrient composition can be affected by cultivation conditions and thus the nutritional value may vary depending on cultivation conditions. Data on the nutritional value of microalgae for ruminants are scarce. Therefore, the objective was to study different attributes characterizing the suitability of microalgae as ruminant feed. Furthermore, it should be investigated if these attributes are affected by cell disruption and if they are related to the nutrient composition.
