An investigation in the pastoral zone of Niger with 27 sedentary, transhumant and nomadic households in 1992 and 1993 revealed that land productivity of cropping was 8 to 9 times that of animal husbandry, but labour productivity was only 0.2. Productivity of mobile systems was up to 20 % higher than that of stationary systems. Future land use of the pastoral zone in the Sahel will be increasingly by associated crop Iivestock systems.
