When small amts. of polar org. solvents like CH3CN or DMSO are added to H2O as a solvent the lifetime of Ru(bpy)32+ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) complexes and their quenching by MV2+ (MV2+ = methylviologen) is strongly influenced. This is attributed to selective solvation. An est. of the first solvation shell is given and it is inferred that electron transfer occurs in a solvent sepd. pair. Thus the inner-sphere reorganization energy is influenced by selective solvation. Ionic strength affects not only diffusion but also the first solvation shell.
