Buses & trains | Job-Ticket

It is important for employees and students that the Hohenheim campus is easily accessible by public transport. There is still significant potential for improvement here: A direct light rail connection to downtown Stuttgart or the extension of bus line 65 to the airport are just two of the options currently under discussion. Measures like this would help improve the parking situation around the university.

Information about the Deutschlandticket (Germany Ticket)

The introduction of the Deutschlandticket will have an impact on existing JobTicket BW subscriptions.

Further information can be found on the pages of the LBV as well as on the pages of the contract partner Deutsche Bahn AG.

Why don't the buses run more often?

The University of Hohenheim regularly argues for buses to run more frequently. Until now, the VVS has rejected this in all negotiations.

The reason: Packed buses are a phenomenon that mainly occurs at the beginning of the winter semester (mid-October to Christma). During the lecture-free period, by contrast, the buses only see a very small number of passengers.

That said, VVS has promised to provide longer buses, or two buses at the same time, during peak hours and as needed.

State problems directly

  • If there are problems with overcrowded buses, University members should contact Construction and Property Management, naming the exact time and the bus line in question. That information will then be passed on to VVS with a request to address the situation.
  • University members should contact VVS directly with more general feedback regarding their services: VVS contact form

Efforts to get a direct city railway connection

SSB and the University are collaborating on plans to improve city train connections to the Hohenheim campus. These are long-term plans, however, that can only be realized in 10 years from now or even much later, depending on the specifics.

The University advocates for a new track in Möhringen that would enable passengers to go downtown without having to change trains and that would be relatively easy to build. The SSB now also views this as an attractive possibility and wants to make specific plans for this in the upcoming years.

The project was also given support from the online voting on the Stuttgart citizen’s budget (April 2017). From among 2,664 submitted requests, this reached 13th place.

Job ticket and more, improved connections

One important goal to make public transportation more attractive for University staff was already accomplished in early 2016. With the JobTicket BW, state employees currently receive a discount of €25 per month.

The University is also working toward:

  •     improved public transport connections to the eastern parts of campus (Palace, Kavaliershäuser, Meiereihof).
  •     Better connections to the region (e.g. Esslingen, Reutlingen, Tübingen).

A promising project in the mid-term is the new regional and long-distance train station that is to be built at the airport in the context of Stuttgart 21. Once that station is finished, the bus connections to Hohenheim will also be restructured.
