The statutory maternity protection period comprises 6 weeks before the expected date of birth and 8 weeks after the birth. The period is extended to 12 weeks after delivery in the event of premature birth, multiple births, or the discovery of a disability before the end of 8 weeks after delivery. During this period, you will not take part in compulsory courses and will not be admitted to examinations.
With regard to examinations for which you have already been registered, this means that:
- Your registration will be cancelled. As in the case of withdrawal, compulsory registration is made for the next possible examination date.
- For theses that have already been registered (Bachelor’s or Master’s theses), a withdrawal is recorded, that is, the examination attempt is reset. The work can then be restarted.
A waiver of the protection period is possible both before and after childbirth, but requires an explicit declaration. This declaration can be revoked at any time during the protection period. Form "Declaration of waiver of the maternity protection period"
It is also possible to continue studying despite taking advantage of the protection period if this is expressly requested. Registering for an examination is regarded as such an explicit declaration. However, this declaration can also be revoked at any time.
As before, you can also take a leave of absence during your pregnancy and interrupt your studies. Further information on leave of absence and application form
