FAQ - International prospective students

Students and doctoral candidates from EU and EFTA member states and from countries with bilateral agreements with Germany do not need to apply for a visa.

Citizens of all other countries must have a valid visa for "Studienzwecke" (study purposes) to be able to study or to do a doctorate in Germany. Please apply for your visa in good time and do not enter the Germany with a tourist visa! It cannot be transformed into visa for study purposes.

The state of Baden-Württemberg has passed a law introducing tuition fees of €1,500 per semester for newly enrolled international students not from EU/EEA countries starting in the winter semester 2017/18. In addition, they will still need to pay the administrative and Student Services fees as well as the contribution to the Student Parliament totaling €186.70 per semester (as of the winter semester 2022/23). The tuition fees do not include any costs for accommodation or living.

Students have to pay for their living expenses, which are relatively high in Germany. You should expect to pay at least €831 per month for rent, food, books, health insurance, public transportation, excursions, etc.

Exchange students from a partner university of the UHOH can apply for a “Baden-Württemberg-Scholarship”.

Unfortunately, the UHOH cannot provide any scholarships for the regular international Bachelor's and Master's students.

There are several residence halls around the campus of the UHOH. We will send you all relevant information regarding the application process for a room in our residence halls with your letter of admission. However, please note that rooms in the student halls are very limited! We strongly recommend looking for a room on the private housing market, as well.

To apply for the Bachelor's study programs and the German-language Master’s programs (that is, all Master’s programs in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences (except for Economics), and the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences’ Master’s programs in Agricultural Sciences, Agribusiness, and Biobased Products and Bioenergy), you will need to submit proof of your German language skills.

Applicants applying for one of the English-taught Master's programs must provide proof of their proficiency in English and hand it in before the application deadline.

KIM provides four computer rooms for students, some of which are also accessible in the evening.

Once you are enrolled at the UHOH, you will automatically receive an account. The login information will be sent to you with the admission letter.

If your qualifications are not sufficient to study in Germany, you can attend a Studienkolleg (preparatory course), provided you meet the admission requirements. There you can then acquire the missing knowledge within one year to be able to study in Germany. You cannot apply directly to a Studienkolleg. If you are admitted to UHOH (for a degree program that you can enter following the Studienkolleg), you will automatically be enrolled in a Studienkolleg.

Student Exchange: You can study at the UHOH as an exchange student for one or two semesters. If your university is not a partner university, you can still apply as a so-called “free mover”.

Study with a degree: You can also study an entire Bachelor's or Master's program at the UHOH and acquire an academic degree.

Doctorate: You can also do your doctorate at the UHOH.
